Respectful Workplaces and Anti-Harassment Training is designed to create a workplace characterized by respect for all and in which harassment does not occur.
Respectful Workplaces training educates participants on a continuum of possible behavior in the workplace, and situates harassment within that continuum:
- Respectful Behavior: This should be the norm in a workplace.
- Uncivil Behavior: This is disrespectful behavior that is not based on a protected legal characteristic (such as sex, race, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or age) but is inappropriate and harmful in a workplace, even if not illegal.
- Bullying: This is significantly harmful and toxic behavior that is not based on a protected legal characteristic.
- Harassment: This is offensive behavior taken on the basis of a legally protected characteristic, which is both not permitted in the workplace and illegal in certain contexts.
The Respectful Workplaces training engages supervisory and non-supervisory employees in an interactive process to identify examples of respectful behavior and uncivil behavior.
The training educates participants on why respectful behavior leads to a productive workplace, and why uncivil behavior and bullying are toxic for the workplace. Participants learn skills-building for giving and receiving feedback on unwelcome behavior through a series of role plays. In addition, the training provides ideas for coworkers to intervene as bystanders to stop bad behavior.
The Anti-Harassment segment of the training provides participants with examples of prohibited harassment and information on how to report such harassment, as well as actions the organization will take if a complaint is made. This segment meets the anti-harassment training requirements of various states and localities (including New York, California, District of Columbia, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois and Maine).
For supervisors, a supplemental part of the training provides skills-building on how to listen to and respond to complaints of uncivil behavior, bullying or harassment and how to coach an employee who is engaging in uncivil behavior.
One training session for supervisory and non-supervisory employees takes 3.5 hours. The supplemental training session for supervisors takes 2 hours. Please email me at [email protected] to discuss pricing.
